Overview

Wesley is a senior associate in the Shipping, Aviation and Logistics Practice Group in our Durban office.

He joined Bowmans in January 2023 and, prior to his arrival, was a senior associate in the Shipping, Logistics and Customs Department at a prominent South African shipping law firm.

Wesley has experience in admiralty and logistics related matters, with a focus on the enforcement of maritime claims, casualties and carriage of goods. He has acted for ship owners, charterers, P&I Clubs and freight forwarders.

Wesley is a notary public. He achieved the highest result for the notary examination in his province.

He also sits on the Executive Committee of the Durban Chapter of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa.

Experience

  • Acting for ship-owners, insurers, and charterers in maritime casualties by arresting and attaching ships and bunkers in order to obtain security for ongoing international arbitration proceedings.
  • Advising ship-owners and charterers on the prospects of arresting ships as associated ships, including any potential risks associated with a claim for countersecurity for a wrongful arrest.
  • Analysing international company reports, annual returns, and similar documents in order to establish common control and ownership in enforcing maritime claims for ship-owners, insurers and charterers.
  • Negotiating security and drafting letters of undertaking for owners and charterers as well as ensuring the timeous release of ships and bunkers from arrest.
  • Advising clients in the logistics sector on claims arising under their standard trading terms and conditions read with relevant legislation as well as enforcing said claims in the appropriate forum
  • Dealing with claims on behalf of local and international shipping lines, including issues relating to the ancillary charges regarding detention and demurrage.
  • Experience in drafting High Court documents for large-scale opposed and unopposed matters within the admiralty and logistics sectors.
