Overview

Richard Shein is a partner and team leader in our Johannesburg office Dispute Resolution Department.

Richard specialises in commercial litigation matters and is a member of the firm’s Mining Sector Group.  His experience covers the full spectrum of dispute resolution fora ranging from private mediation and arbitration, specialist tribunals (such as the South African Companies Tribunal) to the civil courts. He has a particular interest and expertise in dealing with contractual disputes, shareholder disputes and corporate recoveries, as well as company law matters and has worked for several of the firm’s large local and international corporate clients in high value and complex matters.

Richard’s clients (which include both multinationals and local listed companies) span a variety of sectors including, banking and finance, retail, pharmaceutical, advertising, gambling, tobacco and mining and resources.

Richard is a regular contributor to the World Banks’ Doing Business annual report (now in its twelfth series).  Specifically, Richard contributes to the Enforcing Contracts section of the report which compares the litigation process, and the ability of a country’s legal system ability to enforce contracts, in over 180 jurisdictions around the world.

Richard has also contributed to the Allen & Overy Global Litigation Survey.  This survey seeks to assess ten indicators of the litigation process in 137 legal systems.  This ground-breaking survey assists commercial counterparties to analyse cross-border legal risks as well as provide a more general guide to the litigation procedure across jurisdictions. “
