Overview

Michael Swartland is a partner in our Cape Town office Finance Practice.

He has significant experience in preference share and BEE funding, structured finance, secured and syndicated lending, capital markets, private equity, as well as general corporate and commercial matters.

He regularly advises a number of major local and international financial institutions and corporates in relation to South African law aspects of bilateral and syndicated lending arrangements and preference share funding, including exchange control, taking of security under South African law and related regulatory matters.

Michael regularly acts on matters with major clients, such as Old Mutual, Standard Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, Investec Asset Management, Fairfax Africa Investments, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa and Curro Holdings Ltd.

Experience

Most recently, Michael was part of the teams who advised:

  • on the complex unbundling and restructuring of Imperial Holdings Ltd logistics and motor businesses and refinancing over ZAR 20 billion of indebtedness;
  • RMB, on the provision of funding to a subsidiary of Remgro, one of South Africa’s top three companies, in respect of the acquisition of a new business;
  • a local bank on financing applied to acquire a shopping centre in Zambia; and
  • a consortium of South African and Namibian banks on the $375 million financing of the next De Beers Marine Namibia diamond exploration vessel.
