Judd is a trusted expert in pan-African competition law and regularly handles complex transactions and matters across the continent, including, in South Africa, Botswana, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), eSwatini, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and others.

Judd has worked on some of the most significant transactions on the continent. His clients value his solutions driven, decisive and thorough approach, particularly in the context of the evolving African competition law and public interest landscape.

Judd also has a wealth of experience in prohibited practices (horizontal, vertical and abuse of dominance), leniency applications, complaints, market inquiries, compliance reviews and training. He has been involved in the Competition Commission’s online intermediation platforms market inquiry (representing several multinationals); the first dawn raid conducted in Namibia; and represented various firms accused of anticompetitive conduct.

Judd has advised clients across a broad range of sectors and brings international competition law experience and value to his clients, having practised in both South Africa and the United Kingdom.

  • Advisor to Ardagh Glass in respect of its acquisition of Consol Glass, a significant glass producer in Africa.
  • Advisor to Imperial Logistics in respect of Dubai World’s ZAR 12 billion acquisition of Imperial Logistics. Imperial Logistics operates in multiple jurisdictions globally and on the African continent.
  • Advisor to Bombardier Inc., in respect of the sale of its railroad rolling stock and signaling business to Alstom SA.
  • Advisor to Refinitiv, in respect of the African competition law aspects of The London Stock Exchange’s acquisition of the issued shares in Refinitiv (global provider of financial markets data).  Merger notifications were submitted in multiple jurisdictions in Africa.
  • Advisor to KPS Capital Partners LP in respect of its acquisition of the aluminium flat rolled products business of Norsk Hydro ASA.
  • Advisor to PepsiCo Inc. in relation to its acquisition of Pioneer Foods for approximately USD 1.7 billion (one of PepsiCo’s biggest investments outside of North America).  The transaction was notified to and approved by multiple authorities in Africa.
  • Advisor to Network International in respect of its acquisition of financial services company, 3G Direct Pay Holdings.  The transaction was notified to and approved by multiple authorities in Africa.
  • Advising Aton GmbH in respect of its proposed hostile takeover of Murray & Roberts Ltd.  The transaction was vehemently opposed by the Competition Commission in South Africa, as well as by the target firm (but approved elsewhere in Africa).  The matter also involved an urgent interdict application lodged by the target firm before the Competition Tribunal / Competition Appeal Court of South Africa seeking to restrain Aton and its related companies from exercising voting rights in respect of the target firm, which was successfully defended and which set notable precedent.
  • Advisor to Chevron in respect of the sale of its interests in Chevron South Africa and Chevron Botswana.
