Overview
Fathima has over 10 years’ experience in corporate tax experience including reviewing and preparing complex corporate tax returns, identifying tax risks and opportunities, voluntary disclosure applications, implementing new taxes (carbon taxes and sugar beverage levies), post-acquisition integration of businesses, complex business disposals, managing SARS audits and providing training on topical tax issues.
She was a tax manager for a listed company group and prior to that Fathima was a senior tax lecturer at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. During her time at the university, she lectured taxation to the third-year students on the CTA programme and had the opportunity to work with the late Professor Lindsay Mitchell, developing her strong research background as well as publishing articles in a leading tax journal. She was a member of the university’s Teaching and Learning Committee, and dedicated her free time to tutoring the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) Thuthuka Bursary students.
Fathima is a CA(SA) and a member of Saica’s National Tax Committee (NTC). Her contribution was establishing the Carbon Tax Committee as a sub-committee of NTC to liase with SARS on compliance matters and practical issues relating to carbon tax pre and post implementation. She was a lead part of the NTC team that advocated with SARS to amend or retract the IT14SD return (it was eventually retracted) due to the practical difficulties and associated compliance burden the completion of this return placed on large taxpayers. She was an external examiner for the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal for many years.
