Overview
Alan is a senior associate in our Cape Town office Dispute Resolution Department.
He has experience in various aspects of dispute resolution including litigation, arbitration, inquiries and advisory work. He assists in civil and commercial matters covering insolvency and restructuring, media and property law, trusts and banking and administrative law. Alan also has a keen interest in social media law and has been involved in a number of arbitrations and high-profile high court cases in this area.
Alan has been involved in a number of arbitrations and high profile High Court cases as well as enquiries where he has worked as part of teams representing various large corporate clients of the firm. Since joining Bowmans, he has gained experience in various aspects of dispute resolution, including litigation, arbitration, enquiries as well as advisory work, and had the opportunity to assist in a number of matters for major local and international clients relating to civil and commercial matters including insolvency and restructuring, media, property, trusts, banking and administrative law related disputes and various other commercial matters. He also has a keen interest in social media laws in South Africa as well as abroad.
He received prizes for being the top student in the Law of Succession and Intellectual Property Law at the University of Cape Town. Alan was on the Dean’s merit list from 2005 to 2010.
He is a member of the South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association, International Bar Association and American Bar Association.
Experience
- Advised the administrator of a sectional title scheme placed under administration. He has successfully brought numerous applications for the extension of the period of administration and has advised the administrator on a myriad of issues including the launching of a prohibitory interdict against hotel operating from the building on the basis that such operations are unlawful.
- Advised a lender in a multitude of applications pertaining to the successful liquidation of a special purpose vehicle within a securitization scheme following the loss of millions of South African Rands as a result of certain fraudulent conduct including applications for the extension of the powers of the duly appointed liquidators and the convening of an insolvency enquiry.
- Advised the producer and executive producer of the feature film documentary ‘Blood Lions’ and was responsible for the negotiation and drafting of the numerous release forms, employment contracts as well as distribution agreements. He also facilitated and finalised the necessary insurance and successfully opposed an urgent interdict brought against the producer and executive producer which threatened to prejudice their initial screenings in London.
