The Legal 500 rankings for Europe, Middle East and Africa released 12 April 2017, confirm the strength of Bowmans in Africa, highlighting the firm’s competitive position as a leading pan-African legal services provider.

The guide rates seven Bowmans’ practice areas as Tier 1 and recognises ten of its lawyers as elite ‘leading lawyers’ in a variety of categories. A further 48 lawyers have received notable mentions. The firm is also recommended across 14 practice areas in Kenya and South Africa.

“I am happy that our rankings by respected and independent global research organisations are consistently high. This confirms that our clients are confident that they are working with some of the best legal experts on the continent,” says Bowmans chairman and senior partner, Rob Legh.

Calibre assessed on merit alone

The Legal 500 series contacts over 300 000 clients globally to obtain feedback on which law firms meet the criteria that today’s in-house counsel and business leaders require, wherever in the world their work takes them. The research company then benchmarks each law firm versus competitors in the practice area in question.

Law firms pay nothing to participate and so Legal 500 is free to assess calibre on merit alone. The research is conducted annually, providing a detailed qualitative assessment of various factors including work conducted; experience and depth of teams; specialisms and ancillary services; and, most importantly, clients’ opinions.

The guide notes that “Bowmans is a dominant force in cross-border transactions, including deals involving multiple African jurisdictions, and is building its profile in private equity for international as well as local funds.”

The guide further states that ‘Bowmans has a sizeable team and is “a nose ahead of everyone”, according to a competitor. It has a tremendous record in South Africa and East Africa, providing “excellent turnaround times”, “a professional service” and an “in-depth understanding” of clients’ businesses and subject matter.’

Last month, the firm announced that 60 of its lawyers and 17 practice areas from across Africa were recognised by another leading international legal research organisation, Chambers & Partners.
