During May 2023, members of our Bowmans’ Private Equity Practice attended the annual African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (AVCA) Conference held in Cairo, Egypt, and the annual Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA) Conference held in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

The AVCA conference delved into the challenges and success of investing in Africa. The SAVCA conference highlighted the resilience of the South African private equity landscape.

A common thread that flowed through both conferences was the sense that the private capital investment landscape in Africa continues to find a way to adapt to external impacts and grow in the wake of both macro- and micro-economic challenges (such as Covid-19, the Russian-Ukraine war and South Africa’s loadshedding crisis and recent greylisting by the Financial Action Task Force).

The discussions showcased how private capital investors in Africa have navigated, and continue to navigate, these global and local storms with input from those who continue to face such challenges and those who have recently emerged from such adversity.
